Five books. One terrain. The same standard of evidence.
The Brain is a five-book series by Dr. Gurpreet Singh Padda, MD, MBA, MHP. The Starved Brain, The Pained Brain, The Angry Gut and The Dopamine Brain are published in Kindle and paperback; The Humbled Brain, the last, is being written. Behind every chapter sits a Deep Dive of the evidence, written to hand to your own physician. WorkMD, business education for physicians, sits alongside them.

WorkMDWhat is The Brain book series?
Five books by Dr. Gurpreet Singh Padda, MD, MBA, MHP, an interventional pain physician in St. Louis. One terrain, the same standard of evidence. Each book stands alone. Read together, they are a single case.
The case: the brain that thinks, the nerves that hurt, the gut that feeds them and the reward system that decides what we chase are not separate subjects. They fail together. The symptom that brings a person to a doctor is where the failure announces itself, not where it started.
Why five books and not five subjects?
Because the body does not file its problems in separate folders.
A brain starved of the materials it is built from. A nervous system left in a fire that never finished. A gut that feeds and inflames them both. A reward system that learned what to want and when to move. A mind that has to admit it is not in charge. That is not five problems. It is one failure, read from five sides. The body has it as one system; the reading has to go one side at a time.
The rule behind every book is the one Dr. Padda practices by: treat the terrain, not the symptom.
Where did the series come from?
The clinic, not the literature. The same insulin, the same unfinished inflammation and the same nutrient shortfalls that keep a back from healing set how loudly a nerve fires and how well a brain ages. Each book follows that one observation into a different part of the body.
The numbers made it unavoidable. Fewer than 12.2% of American adults were metabolically healthy by NHANES 2009-2016 criteria. Under tighter cardiometabolic criteria through 2017-2018, fewer than 7%. A halving inside a decade. Inside the practice, fewer than 3% of patients overall are metabolically healthy, and fewer than 1% of chronic pain patients. Those are practice-reported figures from our own population, not trial outcomes, and individual results vary.
So every book starts from the same assumption: metabolic dysfunction is the default to exclude, not a rare finding to hunt for.
What are the five books?
1. The Starved Brain
Modern Nutrition: Overfed but Malnourished. Published September 7, 2026. Most of what gets called normal brain aging is decades of quiet malnutrition, in a population that has never missed a meal. Overfed on calories, short of the materials the brain is built from, and inflamed by the excess. Ten chapters, organized on four pillars: fuel, structure, nutrients and inflammation. Read about The Starved Brain.
2. The Pained Brain
Chronic Pain: Felt in the Body, Made in the Brain. Published September 16, 2026, written with Dr. KrisJay Fucanan, MD. Your back is not the problem: chronic pain is a systemic metabolic failure that has chosen a joint to announce itself in. Twenty-two chapters and 479 pages, with 2,291 references across its Deep Dives. Read about The Pained Brain.
3. The Angry Gut
The First Brain: Older Than Thought, and Still in Charge. Published September 16, 2026, written with Ami Michelle Grimes. The anatomy chart is upside down: the gut was built first, runs 168 million neurons of its own, and sends most of the vagal traffic upward. Thirty-three chapters on the wall, the wire, the flora, the bile, the drugs and the food supply. Read about The Angry Gut.
4. The Dopamine Brain
Wanting: Why You Chase What You Don't Enjoy. Published September 18, 2026. Dopamine was never the pleasure chemical. It drives wanting, not liking, which is why people keep chasing what they no longer enjoy. Thirty-one chapters from a worm with 302 nerve cells to the clinic, with 577 references in the Deep Dives. Read about The Dopamine Brain.
5. The Humbled Brain
In progress. On limitation, and the admission that we are not in charge. Book five, the last in the series, being written now and not rushed. Read about The Humbled Brain.
What is a Deep Dive?
The evidence file behind one chapter. The book argues. The Deep Dive shows the receipts: the study, its design, who was in it, the number and exactly where it sits in the paper, and what it does not show.
Mixed evidence gets both sides at full strength. A trial that argues against the chapter gets printed. The Angry Gut's Deep Dives go one step further and state what would change Dr. Padda's mind.
Each chapter ends with a code that opens its Deep Dive. You can also request one from the book's Deep Dive page with your name and email. The first arrives within minutes; the rest follow one a week, in order.
They exist for one reason. A patient who walks in with a headline gets a shrug. A patient who walks in with the study, the sample and the limitation gets a conversation.
Why do the books admit where the evidence is weak?
Because a book that only gives you the good news is not a book you can trust with your brain, your back or your gut.
Most health writing shows the studies that agree and skips the rest. This series prints the ones that disagree. It also corrects claims that would help it sell. The Angry Gut dismantles the idea that gut serotonin runs your mood. The Dopamine Brain opens with "I taught it the wrong way for years." The Starved Brain corrects a claim circulating among people who argue its own case.
The confession comes first. The correction follows. That order is the credential.
How big is the evidence behind each book?
| Book | Chapters | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| The Starved Brain | 10 | 26 peer-reviewed references in the book; Deep Dives of up to 101 references per chapter |
| The Pained Brain | 22 | 2,291 references across the Deep Dives |
| The Angry Gut | 33 | A Deep Dive per chapter, including the strongest case against it |
| The Dopamine Brain | 31 | 417 pages and 577 references across the Deep Dives |
| The Humbled Brain | In progress | The same apparatus when finished |
Has the series been in the press?
Three national releases so far, distributed through EIN Presswire by Nectar Media Group:
- July 23, 2026. "New Book The Starved Brain by Dr. Gurpreet Padda Reframes Dementia as a Metabolic Disease of Overnutrition." Carried by AP News.
- September 21, 2026, World Alzheimer's Day. "Dr. Gurpreet Singh Padda, MD Discusses Alzheimer's Research, Not Just Plaque." Carried by AP News, The National Law Review, KTVI FOX 2 St. Louis and the Akron Beacon Journal.
- September 21, 2026. "Dr. Gurpreet Singh Padda, MD Publishes The Pained Brain, Arguing Chronic Pain Is a Metabolic Disease the Scan Cannot See." Carried by AP News, The National Law Review and KTVI FOX 2 St. Louis.
Can I watch instead of read?
Yes.
- The Starved Brain: a five-part video series of about ninety minutes, plus one video per chapter.
- The Pained Brain: twenty-two chapter videos on the Padda Institute channel.
- The Angry Gut: thirty-three chapter videos.
- The Dopamine Brain: thirty-one chapter videos on the Addictionology Center channel.
Each video sits on its chapter's Deep Dive page, so the argument and the evidence are one click apart.
Who are the books for?
- The patient told everything is normal while nothing gets better.
- The family member watching memory slip, pain spread or a habit take over.
- The clinician who wants primary studies with their limits stated.
They are education, not medical advice, and not a home protocol. Nobody should start, stop or change a medication because of them.
What if I want my own case looked at?
The books tell you what to measure. They cannot tell you what your terrain is doing. Dr. Padda sees patients in person in St. Louis, and each book routes to the practice that matches it:
- Brain and gut terrain: Regen.MD.
- Chronic pain, generator and terrain in one visit: Padda Institute.
- Wanting, habit and dependence: Addictionology Center.
The whole clinical picture is on the pain and metabolic medicine page. Text (314) 886-5902. Outside St. Louis, take the Deep Dives to your own physician.
Where does WorkMD fit?
WorkMD teaches the business medicine never taught. No medical school shows a physician how to grow and scale a private practice, and independent practices are paying for it: private practice fell from 60.1% of physicians in 2012 to 46.7% in 2022. WorkMD works on revenue, cost, operations and technology, and prepares practices for a sale that closes. It sits on this shelf because the same logic runs through both: follow the incentive, and say plainly where the system is broken.
Who is the author?
Dr. Padda is board certified in anesthesiology, pain medicine, interventional pain, addiction medicine and obesity medicine, and directs the Padda Institute in St. Louis. He is licensed in Missouri and Illinois (NPI 1427035955; Missouri medical license MD 100572). Before The Brain, he coauthored Next Level Your Life (January 11, 2023), an Amazon best seller in 41 categories, contributing the chapter "Thinking in Spectrums: How Crisis Sharpens an Unfocused Mind," and wrote The Ideal.Fit Recipe Book: 175 Delicious Keto Recipes with Ami Hendrix-Grimes (Nectar Media Group, May 22, 2020). His full record is on the Dr. Gurpreet Singh Padda page.
